My father once said to me “A consultant is someone who borrows your watch to tell you the time, then flogs your watch!” The irony in this statement is that after decades in the public service (including a tour of national service) my father eventually became a consultant. This statement though drives my consulting ethos. Consultants are not all knowledgeable, omniscient super humans who know better than you do.
Consultants are like fun house mirrors, we simply reflect back to you an image of your business that is distorted by our experience in dozens of other businesses. Good Business Consultants are like Psychologists, they should listen to their clients, and using their unique knowledge of the inner workings of business, guide the client to finding solutions to improve the overall health of that business. This is Klefen’s consulting philosophy.
